Electi Ability: Birdsong Ability Description: As a half-Therian, Aouma was born with a short beak rather than a human mouth. Because of his unique restructuring of both his mouth and vocal chords, he can replicate any bird sound in existence. What makes this an electi ability rather than a talent is his ability to copy any bird without practice, regardless if he knows what that bird is or not. If you asked him to copy a Toucan, and he didn’t know what a Toucan was, he’d be able to sound like one perfectly. This allows him to be able to, effectively, talk to birds. The downside of this is that he is unable to understand birds or what he’s saying and thus could wind up accidentally insulting one…
Visual Description: Aouma was born with a short golden beak in place of a mouth. Think of Chica from Five Nights at Freddy’s, unfortunately. He has blonde hair and blue/green eyes, which thankfully are not limited in mobility like a bird’s. He does have a “third eyelid” that he can use to freak people out, but it has no significant use. When he was a child, his parents actually went back and forth on whether or not to remove it due to a doctor suggesting so, until ultimately they decided against it as it wasn’t causing Aouma any harm.
He’s a pretty lanky guy, considerably underweight, though most of it is due to his genetics. He’s been to the doctor numerous times, but he’s actually quite healthy. Wears t-shirts and khaki shorts, or other casual and comfy fitting clothes, often that hang off of him. He also gets cold a considerable amount of the time.
Background: Aouma grew up (in existing memory) in the USA. While he was born in Japan to his cockatiel-therian mother and his human father, they moved to Macon, Georgia, when Aouma was three, meaning he has little-to-no recollection of life in Japan.
Aouma had a pretty relaxed life in the south– it never got too cold, it never got too hot, it got plenty rainy, and he had free roam of the entire plot of land they owned. His family wasn’t particularly well-off, but they had enough to buy or grow food and enough to take care of each other, and that’s what mattered. As they continued to live in their little home, Aouma even began to ‘talk’ to the birds, growing a fascination with the way he could ‘communicate’ with them, even if he didn’t really understand what was going on at the time.
Eventually, he started to attend school, and while he was bullied for his beak, he did make enough friends that he tried to not let the bullying get to him. One day, a bird expert was brought to the school for an event about taking care of the environment. Aouma was amazed, asking the man all sorts of questions, right up until they had to break for recess. Stepping outside, Aouma began to mimic the bird sounds. Some kids were amazed, while his bullies didn’t enjoy the attention he was getting. In order to try to make him look like an idiot, one of them asked him to mimic the dodo bird, both an extinct bird and some sort of slight at calling him stupid. He took on the challenge regardless, doing his best guess. Coincidentally, the bird expert had been nearby, and mentioned to a teacher how Aouma was spot-on.
Later that day, the expert pulls Aouma aside and gives him a quiz on all sorts of birds, and slowly realizes that Aouma’s sounds are more than just a talent. One thing leads to another, and the FBI eventually gets alerted. One day, at home, there was a knock on the door, and some agents there to test his skill for themself.
Upon confirmation of his abilities, Aouma was enrolled into the Electi Academy. And he is nervous as hell.
Interview Transcript:
-Just relax. This recording will only be used again in light of your abilities being confirmed. Now, can you repeat your name for the recorder?
Aouma Yami.
-Thank you. And your age?
Eighteen…
-And how would you describe your talent with your beak?
Well, I uh… I just… Here, gimme a bird.
-A-Any bird?
Yeah.
-Blue Macaw.
<There’s the sound of a blue macaw over the transcript. It’s very loud.>
-For the listener, that was Mr. Yami who just did that. I’m verifying with the expert we brought with us, Mr. Nix, who says that it’s correct.
Yeah, and I can do any other birds. The funny thing is, I’ve never actually met a Blue Macaw.
-I… see. Let’s try an extinct bird. Have you ever been to Hawaii?
No.
- Try the Hawaiian honeycreeper.
<There’s a pause… Then, a quiet noise that gradually gets louder the more confident Aouma gets in the sound. It is, exactly, a Hawaiian honeycreeper.>
- Mr. Nix is signaling once again that the sound is correct… And, Mr. Yami, how did you find this ability?
Messin’ around at school, mostly.
-Right.. Well, I think with this information, we can offer you a spot at the Electi Rehabilitation Academy–
Rehab? I haven’t done anything wrong.
-That is correct, however, the academy would introduce you to more Electi that you could befriend, and perhaps open doors for you in future careers down the line.
Like… for my resume?
-Yes… like for your resume.
So I can finally work at the bird sanctuaries?!
-Uh–
I’M IN!
