Duty Calls

“Calhoun? Calhoun! CALHOUN WAKE UP!” My father shouts.

I was asleep at the time,  but that loud, booming voice of his is music to my ears, and it always gets me up in the morning, it’s as if it’s a normal routine in bootcamp. I quickly rose from my slumber just to see what was going on.

“Calhoun today is the day, where you finally become a real man!”

Become *a real man*? What is my father getting at? Perhaps he is referring to me getting a job, things like that are hard to come by in a city where I live. I quickly grew inquisitive.

“Tell me, what do you mean by that? Am I getting a job? Or . . . are you just arranging another partner for me like last time?” I chuckled.

“No my boy, you are going to become a KNIGHT! Something that you have dreamt of being, remember?”

I feel the urge to want to have my jaw drop all the way to the floor, sadly that isn’t possible. Excitement surged into my body, I couldn’t help but hug my father tight.

“W-What really?! Oh man, dad, we have to go sign up!” I said in glee.

“Well son, thankfully we don’t have to go out, I already signed up for you, so they will be coming to us in person!”

After this exchange of happiness, I heard a sudden knock at our entrance door of our home.

CRACK! CRACK! CRACK!

“Now who might that be?”

My father led me to the door with his hand placed on my shoulder. A part of me felt extremely giddy, hoping that the person behind that door are the ones who will accept me into their ranks.

As my father opened the door, light shined into my eyes, temporarily blinding me. It is until the blinding ray subsides, only for me to discover what is truly causing it.

"Whoa . . ."

Their clean, stainless steel, the elegant cloth hanging between the gaps of  their thick armor, their glowing yellow eyes that illuminate the darkness within their helmets, their towering height that makes me feel utterly insignificant . . . it's as if God's angels have come to visit me.

"Young one, we have come to lend you a hand, as your father has told us how eager you are to join us." One of the knights said, before reaching out his big metal hand. I could see the circuitry and wires embedded within his palm.

I felt honored, but I was utterly speechless. I reached out my own hand and held his own. It felt warm to the touch.

"Come, you have much to learn." The knight said, before gently dragging me away from my father and home.

This was obviously the best decision I have made, well, I thought it was for a moment, until I heard the screams and cries from my mother from a distance. I turned my head back to see, only to witness her reaching her hand out to me from afar, crying and shouting out my name, but my father dragged her back into their home, in which the entrance door soon closed shut afterwards.
